Hatches and Fly Selection Class
A fly fishing class all about hatches and flies for trout
Hatches and Fly Selection for Trout
The most commonly asked question in fly fishing is, “What fly are the trout taking?” This daunting question has many variables. This half-day class is designed to create a system for decoding what the trout are eating. This fly fishing class simplifies aquatic entomology into a more usable concept of Angler Entomology. A year is broken into manageable seasons, with each season having a menu of key hatches the trout are most likely to feed on. The class will present which fly patterns imitate key hatches, and how to select fly patterns to match the water type and feeding zone in the water column. The class also covers how to incorporate the hatches, trout's behavior, and the stream ecosystem into the fly selection process. Hatches and Fly Selection for Trout is a comprehensive and integrated class that incorporates a multifaceted approach to fly selection. It will improve your fly angling for trout.

Testimonials
“One of the difficult parts of fly fishing is knowing what fly a trout is likely to eat that day, that season. Patrick’s course “Hatches & Fly Selection” gave me a usable system for recognizing in-depth trout behavior, how to identify the four main groups of aquatic and terrestrial flies, and a really clear understanding of which flies will deliver results. No one in Western North Carolina knows more about the “What” and “Why” of fly selection than Patrick. He is an excellent and entertaining teacher with long years of on-the-water experience. Highly recommended!”

I took Patrick’s Hatches and Fly Selection Class in April. Patrick did a great job discussing insect lifecycle, hatch timing, fly selection criteria, and trout behavior. The class was well designed and presented, and even included some “test your knowledge” group exercises to reinforce learning. The class includes a copy of Patrick’s well-researched book, “Hatches of Pisgah Forest,” as well as handouts that follow his presentation. Patrick offers top-quality fly fishing instruction at a great price. I highly recommend this course for anglers wanting to improve their results on local waters. Well done!
