French Broad River Bass Float Trip

Many associate North Carolina with trout fishing.  However, most people don't realize the French Broad River is a quality bass fishery.  The French Broad River has excellent habitat for smallmouth bass.

There are many sections of the river to fish, ranging from below Asheville, NC, to north of Asheville.   There are steep, fast sections with several class II rapids, with plenty of shoal water for bass.  Deep pools, fast runs, rapids, and abundant rocks provide ample places for bass to hide and ambush prey.  There are some sections that offer extraordinary scenic views, even in the Asheville area.  The tracks run parallel to the river and cross it as you enter the gorge area.

The French Broad has an abundance of crayfish and minnows that make up a staple diet for bass.  Because of the river's variety, tactics vary, too.  Anglers fishing this river for bass will learn a variety of tactics for taking bass on streamers or light spin tackle.

The best times to fish the French Broad for bass are spring through October.  Bass move through the river and, depending on the time of year, occupy different locations.  Although many enjoy fly fishing for bass, some will prefer to spin fish.  Either option works on this river.  The river requires an NC inland fishing license.
