Tuckaseegee Float trip for Trout
The Tuckaseegee is one of North Carolina's more famous trout rivers. This tail water river stretches across some of the most scenic locations in the Sylvia and Dillsboro, NC area. Vast stretches of shoals with plenty of pools, flats, and runs to fish.
Most of the river is hatchery-supported, but an 8-mile stretch of delayed harvest draws most anglers. The section is heavily stocked most years. Anglers can use a variety of tactics here, including nymphing, dry fly fishing, and streamers. In the fall, this stretch can produce excellent dry fly fishing. My best trout on a dry fly was caught on this section, a 25” hooked jaw male in full spawning colors.
The best times to fish the Tuckaseegee for trout are October through May. Summer gets warm, and things slow down, but anytime, even winter during this period, can be fantastic. The river is home to many aquatic insects, but caddis are particularly abundant and seem to be on the water almost constantly.
Dillsboro is the take-out location of the delayed harvest. It is home to small shops, a great coffee house, a brewery, and several great restaurants. The Great Commission Coffee Shop on Front Street is a great place to grab a cup of joe before or after a trip. Great folks and good beans for a smooth cup of coffee. Haywood Smokehouse is a great barbecue place to unwind after a fishing trip. The food is fantastic.
