Bass Float trip on the Tuckaseegee River,
Many associate the Tuckaseegee River with trout fishing. It is most noted for the delayed harvest section near Dillsboro, NC, as a top trout fishery. However, most are unaware that the sections downstream of the delayed harvest section are a quality bass fishery. Trout and bass inhabit similar river types, including shoal waters, deep runs, riffles, and rapids. The only difference is the temperature range; bass prefer slightly warmer temperatures. This makes the section below Dillsboro an ideal bass fishery.
The section below Dillsboro is the gorge section. This steep, fast section has several class II rapids, with plenty of shoal water for bass. Deep pools, fast runs, rapids, and abundant rocks provide ample places for bass to hide and ambush prey. This section offers extraordinary scenic views and is home to the Dillsboro Train. The tracks run parallel to the river and cross it as you enter the gorge area. This is a great section for an adventurous fishing trip.
The Tuckaseegee also has an abundance of crayfish and minnows that make up a staple diet for bass, making the Tuck a fantastic streamer fishing river. Because of the river's variety, tactics vary as well. Anglers fishing this river for bass will learn a variety of tactics for taking bass on streamers.
The best times to fish the Tuck for bass are late spring through October. Bass move through the river and, depending on the time of year, occupy different locations. Although many enjoy fly fishing for bass, some will prefer to spin fish. Either is an option on this river. The river requires an NC inland fishing license.
