Wet Fly Fishing Course

How do you fish the classic pheasant tail wet fly?  The pheasant tail wet fly is a staple of wet fly fishing, but just tying one on the end of the leader won’t guarantee results.  This one-day fly fishing class will take you through wet fly styles, rigging, and tactics.

The class begins with understanding why wet fly fishing works.  Learn what insects do that triggers the trout's response.  Wet fly fishing focuses on imitating insect behavior that trout look for.  Also, where are the highest concentrations of insects in the river?  How does this relate to wet fly fishing?  Understanding these questions will help you know what to do, and why, when wet fly fishing.

Next, you will learn to identify conditions for wet fly fishing.  What trout behavior indicates conditions are right for wet fly fishing?  Which seasons are best for wet-fly conditions?  Learn how to identify the proper rise forms that indicate whether trout are feeding on the surface or just below or even deeper.  This knowledge will help you do decide on the rigging type and the flies you tie on.

Participants will learn about wet fly designs, how to tie them, and why they work.  What are the important attributes for a wet fly?  Wet fly fishing traditionally uses a gang of flies, but they need to be properly arranged to be effective.  During the class, you will learn how to construct a proper leader, how to arrange the flies in the correct sequence, and how to modify leader construction to control depth.  In addition to the flies, you will learn what equipment you need for wet fly fishing and how different combinations affect your fishing.  Most notably, you will learn about line selection and leader construction.  With proper rigging and line selection, wet fly fishing can cover a wide range of depths.

The class will cover wet fly fishing techniques and tactics.  How should you modify your cast?  What is the proper rod angle, and how does rod angle affect the presentation?  How do you strip line while wet fly fishing?   You will spend some time in the field developing wet fly fishing techniques, then venture into the water to learn wet fly fishing strategies.

The morning session will be indoors or in the field, learning the concepts and techniques needed for wet fly fishing.  The afternoon will be spent on the water, learning the strategies and practicing the tactics while fishing.

Participants should be prepared to fish in the afternoon.  Each participant will receive a handout on wet fly fishing and be provided flies for the day.  Each participant will receive a pack of 6 wet flies for the class.
